Perimenopause coaching: what it is and how to choose

Perimenopause coaching: what it is and how to choose

Perimenopause changes how you sleep, recover, train, and feel, often all at once and usually with little guidance. A good perimenopause coach helps you turn that into a plan you can actually follow. Here is what the different kinds of coaching cover, what to look for, and how Phaes coaches your training through it.

What is perimenopause coaching?

Perimenopause coaching is structured, ongoing support for the years leading up to menopause. A coach helps you understand what is changing, build habits around training, food, sleep, and stress that fit your body now, and adjust as your symptoms shift. It sits alongside medical care, not in place of it: a coach does not diagnose, prescribe, or decide on MHT (HRT). That is your clinician's job.

The main kinds of perimenopause coach

  • Health and lifestyle coaches. Broad support across nutrition, sleep, stress, and habit change, usually through 1:1 calls or small group programs.
  • Fitness and strength coaches. Programming for how you train now: lifting heavy to protect muscle and bone, fewer and sharper hard sessions, and recovery that respects slower bounce-back. This is where Phaes sits.
  • Mindset and life coaches. Support with the identity, work, and relationship shifts that often travel with midlife.
  • Clinicians. Doctors and nurse practitioners with menopause training handle diagnosis, MHT (HRT), and other treatment. They are not coaches, but a good coach will send you to one.

"Menopause coach" is not a protected title, and certifications vary a lot in depth. Ask what someone trained in, and how they work with your doctor.

What good perimenopause fitness coaching looks like

Phaes coach Kristina Folcik, an endurance coach who went through perimenopause herself, builds training for this stage on a simple idea: quality over quantity. As hormones change, the way you train needs to change with them.

  • Lift heavy. Two to four strength sessions a week depending on your level, with core every day. Heavy enough to challenge you, which is what builds lean muscle and bone. See lifting weights in perimenopause.
  • Short, sharp intensity. One sprint interval session a week (20 to 30 seconds all-out, 90 seconds very easy) and short 40/20 HIIT, in place of long tempo runs and grinding Zone 3 and 4 work.
  • Easy days really easy. A walk, a very easy run, or yoga. Active recovery, not junk miles.
  • A full rest day every week, physical and emotional.
  • A reset week every four weeks. No intensity, weights down about 30 percent, and sleep as the priority.
  • Fuel the work. Enough protein and healthy fats, hydration, and stress management.

MHT (HRT) can ease symptoms a great deal, but it does not build muscle or strength for you. Training and nutrition do that. More on the method in running through perimenopause and the perimenopause workout plan.

How to choose a perimenopause coach

  • Do they adjust to how you feel? Perimenopause is not linear. A fixed 12-week program that ignores a week of 3am wake-ups is not coaching.
  • Do they program strength? Resistance training is one of the most useful things you can do at this stage. Cardio-only plans miss it.
  • Do they track your symptoms and cycle? Patterns across sleep, energy, and a wandering cycle are how a plan learns what you need.
  • Do they stay in their lane? Good coaches refer you to a clinician for treatment decisions and do not promise spot fat loss or hormone fixes.
  • Can you afford to keep going? Coaching works over months, not weeks. Pick something you can sustain.

See a doctor about very heavy or prolonged bleeding, bleeding after menopause, chest pain, or low mood that does not lift. Coaching supports medical care, it does not replace it. Phaes is informational, not medical advice.

How Phaes coaches you through perimenopause

Phaes is a perimenopause coaching app for your training. It puts Kristina's method into a plan that adapts every day, at a fraction of the cost of 1:1 sessions.

  • A daily check-in. Sleep, energy, soreness, symptoms, and where you are in your cycle (or not, if it has wandered or stopped).
  • A plan that adapts. Running, strength, and HIIT built around your level and your goal, easing on rough days instead of demanding the same of you.
  • A coach that proposes, you decide. Phaes suggests specific changes, such as swapping intervals for an easy day or adding a reset week, and you confirm, decline, or push back.
  • Guard rails in the engine. Your rest days, weekly volume, and the four-week reset are enforced, so the plan cannot quietly overtrain you.
  • Free tracking alongside. Cycle and symptom tracking, MHT (HRT) tracking, and body composition are free.

Phaes Coach, the adaptive plan and the coach, is $9.99 a month or $69.99 a year, and your first week is free. See how the Phaes coach works, meet Kristina, or take the 2-minute perimenopause quiz.

Frequently asked questions

What does a perimenopause coach do?

A perimenopause coach gives you structured, ongoing support through the years before menopause: understanding what is changing, building training, nutrition, sleep, and stress habits that fit your body now, and adjusting as symptoms shift. Coaches do not diagnose or prescribe; treatment such as MHT (HRT) is a decision for you and your clinician.

Is a perimenopause coach worth it?

It can be, if the coaching adapts to how you actually feel and includes strength training. Perimenopause is unpredictable, so the value is in a plan that changes with your sleep, energy, and symptoms rather than a fixed program. Sustainability matters too: coaching pays off over months, so choose something you can keep up.

What is a perimenopause fitness coach?

A perimenopause fitness coach programs your training for this stage: heavy strength to protect muscle and bone, fewer and sharper high-intensity sessions, genuinely easy recovery days, and regular lighter weeks. Phaes delivers this as an app, built on a method from Phaes coach Kristina Folcik, and adapts it day by day to your check-ins.

Is Phaes a real coach or an app?

Phaes is an app. Its coaching method comes from Kristina Folcik, an endurance coach who went through perimenopause herself, and the app applies it daily: it reads your check-ins, cycle, symptoms, and training, then proposes specific plan changes that you confirm or decline. It does not offer 1:1 calls.

How much does perimenopause coaching cost?

Human 1:1 coaching is usually billed per session or as a multi-month package, and prices vary widely. Phaes Coach, the adaptive training plan and coach in the Phaes app, is $9.99 a month or $69.99 a year with a free first week. Cycle, symptom, and MHT (HRT) tracking in the app are free.
